In the Indian tradition of knowledge, the science of grammar holds the highest place. Grammar serves as the foundation for using language in a pure, systematic, and meaningful manner. But when we ask where this profound science of grammar originated, Sanatana Dharma offers a wonderful divine account. That sacred source is known as the Maheshwara Sutras.
According to the Shaiva Agamas and the grammatical tradition, after completing His Ananda Tandava (Cosmic Dance of Bliss), Lord Shiva sounded His Damaru fourteen times. From those fourteen divine beats emerged fourteen streams of sacred phonetic sounds, which came to be known as the Maheshwara Sutras. This tradition is explained in detail in the grammatical text Nandikeshwara Kashika.
These fourteen sutras are not merely groups of letters. They form the very foundation of all the sounds and letters of the Sanskrit language. The great sage Panini used these Maheshwara Sutras as the basis for formulating the grammatical rules in his renowned work, the Ashtadhyayi. Therefore, these sutras are regarded as the backbone of Sanskrit grammar.
The Maheshwara Sutras are as follows.
अइउण् । ऋऌक् । एओङ् । ऐऔच् । हयवरट् । लण् । ञमङणनम् । झभञ् । घढधष् । जबगडदश् । खफछठथचटतव् । कपय् । शषसर् । हल् ।
The final letters in these sutras are known as Anubandhas or It letters. With their help, Sage Panini devised a concise symbolic system called Pratyaharas, enabling thousands of grammatical rules to be expressed in an extremely compact form. This is recognized as one of the most remarkable intellectual achievements in the history of linguistics.
From a spiritual perspective, the Maheshwara Sutras symbolize the principle of Shabda Brahman—the Divine Reality manifested as sound. The Vedas proclaim that the entire creation emerged from sound. According to this tradition, language, knowledge, the Vedas, and grammar itself originated from the sacred resonance of Lord Shiva’s Damaru. For this reason, Shiva is praised as Nada Brahma and the embodiment of Shabda Brahman.
The Maheshwara Sutras are valuable not only for students of grammar but also for anyone seeking to explore the depths of India’s spiritual and intellectual heritage. They represent a marvelous confluence of science, language, philosophy, and spirituality. Even today, these fourteen sutras that emerged from the sound of Shiva’s Damaru continue to shine as the lifeline of Sanskrit and the divine foundation of the Indian grammatical tradition.

భారతీయ జ్ఞాన సంప్రదాయంలో వ్యాకరణ శాస్త్రానికి అత్యున్నత స్థానం ఉంది. భాషను శుద్ధంగా, క్రమబద్ధంగా, అర్థవంతంగా ఉపయోగించడానికి వ్యాకరణం ఆధారంగా నిలుస్తుంది. అయితే ఈ వ్యాకరణ శాస్త్రం యొక్క మూలం ఎక్కడి నుండి ఉద్భవించిందనే ప్రశ్నకు సనాతన ధర్మం ఒక అద్భుతమైన దివ్య కథను మనకు అందిస్తుంది. ఆ దివ్య మూలమే మహేశ్వర సూత్రాలు.
శైవ ఆగమాలు మరియు వ్యాకరణ సంప్రదాయం ప్రకారం, పరమశివుడు ఆనంద తాండవం ముగించిన తరువాత తన చేతిలోని ఢమరుకాన్ని పద్నాలుగు సార్లు నాదింపజేశాడు. ఆ పద్నాలుగు ఢమరుక ధ్వనుల నుండి వెలువడిన పద్నాలుగు దివ్య అక్షర సమూహాలనే మహేశ్వర సూత్రాలు అని పిలుస్తారు. ఈ విషయాన్ని వ్యాకరణ సంప్రదాయ గ్రంథమైన నందికేశ్వర కాశికా వివరంగా తెలియజేస్తుంది.
ఈ పద్నాలుగు సూత్రాలు కేవలం అక్షరాల సమూహాలు మాత్రమే కావు. ఇవే సంస్కృత భాషలోని అన్ని వర్ణాలకు మూలాధారంగా నిలిచాయి. మహర్షి పాణిని తన ప్రసిద్ధ వ్యాకరణ గ్రంథమైన అష్టాధ్యాయి రచనలో ఈ మహేశ్వర సూత్రాలను ఆధారంగా చేసుకొని వ్యాకరణ నియమాలను నిర్మించాడు. అందువల్ల ఈ సూత్రాలు సంస్కృత వ్యాకరణానికి వెన్నెముకగా భావించబడుతున్నాయి.

ఈ సూత్రాలలో ఉన్న చివరి అక్షరాలను అనుబంధాలు లేదా ఇత్ అక్షరాలు అని అంటారు. వీటి సహాయంతో పాణిని మహర్షి ప్రత్యాహారాలు అనే సంక్షిప్త సంకేత పద్ధతిని రూపొందించి వేలాది వ్యాకరణ నియమాలను చాలా సంక్షిప్తంగా వ్యక్తీకరించాడు. ఇది ప్రపంచ భాషాశాస్త్ర చరిత్రలో ఒక అద్భుతమైన మేధోసృష్టిగా గుర్తించబడింది.

In the Sanatana Hindu tradition, every Full Moon (Purnima) holds a unique spiritual significance. Among them, the Purnima that falls in the month of Jyeshtha occupies a special place. This sacred day is observed across India as Jyeshtha Purnima, Vat Purnima, Eruvaka Purnima, and Ganga Puja Day. It is a holy occasion that reminds us of charity, righteousness, devotion, and gratitude toward nature.
The month of Jyeshtha is known as one of the hottest periods of the year. Therefore, the scriptures highly praise the donation of water, refreshing drinks, fruits, umbrellas, footwear, and other essentials during this season. The Puranas state that acts of charity performed on Jyeshtha Purnima bestow immense spiritual merit and blessings.
One of the most important observances associated with this day is the Vat Savitri Vratam. Married women worship the sacred Banyan tree in remembrance of Savitri, whose unwavering devotion and chastity enabled her to reclaim the life of her husband Satyavan from Yama, the Lord of Death. It is believed that this worship brings longevity, prosperity, peace, and well-being to the family.
Goddess Ganga is also specially worshipped on Jyeshtha Purnima. Devotees believe that bathing in the sacred Ganga or performing worship with Ganga water washes away sins and grants divine blessings. In many regions, farmers celebrate this day as Eruvaka Purnima, worshipping Mother Earth, cattle, and agricultural tools before beginning a new farming season.
The birth anniversary of Sant Kabir Das is also observed on this day in many parts of India. Kabir Das preached pure devotion to God and emphasized that the Divine resides not merely in temples but in every human heart. His teachings continue to inspire values such as equality, love, compassion, and humanity.
The scriptures also extol the worship of Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva, Goddess Lakshmi, and Lord Satyanarayana on this sacred day. Many devotees perform the Satyanarayana Vratam, seeking divine grace, prosperity, and spiritual upliftment.
This year, Jyeshtha Purnima holds even greater significance because it falls during the Adhika Jyeshtha Masa. The Adhika Masa, also known as Purushottama Masa, occurs periodically in the lunar calendar and is considered especially dear to Lord Vishnu. Spiritual practices such as chanting, meditation, scriptural recitation, charity, Satyanarayana Vratam, and Annadanam performed during this month are believed to yield manifold blessings.
Another major highlight of Jyeshtha Purnima is the grand Snana Yatra celebrated at the sacred Jagannath Temple in Puri, Odisha. On this day, Lord Jagannath, Lord Balabhadra, and Devi Subhadra are ceremonially bathed with 108 pots of sanctified water. This festival is known as Deva Snana Purnima.
Following the sacred bathing ceremony, the deities are believed to enter a period of rest, during which public darshan is temporarily suspended. After the auspicious Nava Yauvana Darshan, the world-famous Jagannath Rath Yatra begins. Thus, Jyeshtha Purnima is regarded as the sacred prelude to the grand Rath Yatra festival.
In this way, Adhika Jyeshtha Purnima occupies a unique place in Sanatana Dharma, bringing together the spiritual traditions of charity, Vat Savitri Vratam, Ganga worship, Eruvaka celebrations, Sant Kabir Das Jayanti, and the divine Snana Yatra of Lord Jagannath.

భారతీయ సనాతన సంప్రదాయంలో ప్రతి పౌర్ణమికి ప్రత్యేకమైన ఆధ్యాత్మిక ప్రాముఖ్యత ఉంది. వాటిలో జ్యేష్ఠ మాసంలో వచ్చే పూర్ణిమకు విశిష్ట స్థానం ఉంది. ఈ పౌర్ణిమను జ్యేష్ఠ పూర్ణిమ, వట పూర్ణిమ, ఏరువాక పూర్ణిమ, గంగా పూజా దినం వంటి పేర్లతో దేశవ్యాప్తంగా భక్తిశ్రద్ధలతో ఆచరిస్తారు. దానం, ధర్మం, భక్తి మరియు ప్రకృతి పట్ల కృతజ్ఞతను గుర్తుచేసే మహత్తరమైన పర్వదినం ఇది.

ఈ పౌర్ణమికి అత్యంత ప్రసిద్ధమైన ఆచారం వటసావిత్రి వ్రతం. సావిత్రి తన పతివ్రత్య మహిమతో యమధర్మరాజు వద్ద నుండి సత్యవాన్ ప్రాణాలను తిరిగి పొందిన ఘట్టాన్ని స్మరించుకుంటూ వివాహిత స్త్రీలు వటవృక్షాన్ని పూజిస్తారు. దీని ద్వారా కుటుంబంలో ఆయురారోగ్యాలు, శాంతి, ఐశ్వర్యాలు కలుగుతాయని విశ్వాసం.
జ్యేష్ఠ పూర్ణిమ రోజున గంగా దేవిని కూడా ప్రత్యేకంగా ఆరాధిస్తారు. గంగాస్నానం లేదా గంగాజలంతో అభిషేకం చేయడం ద్వారా పాపాలు నశించి పుణ్యఫలాలు లభిస్తాయని భక్తుల నమ్మకం. అలాగే రైతులు ఈ రోజును ఏరువాక పూర్ణిమగా జరుపుకుని భూమాతను, పశువులను, వ్యవసాయ పరికరాలను పూజించి కొత్త సాగుకు శ్రీకారం చుడతారు.
ఈ పౌర్ణమి రోజున సంత్ కబీర్ దాస్ జయంతి కూడా అనేక ప్రాంతాలలో జరుపుకుంటారు. కబీర్ దాస్ భగవంతుని పట్ల నిష్కపటమైన భక్తిని బోధించారు. "దేవుడు ఆలయంలో కాదు; ప్రతి హృదయంలో ఉన్నాడు" అనే ఆయన సందేశం నేటికీ మానవాళికి మార్గదర్శకంగా నిలుస్తోంది. జ్యేష్ఠ పూర్ణిమ రోజున ఆయన బోధనలను స్మరించుకోవడం ద్వారా సమానత్వం, ప్రేమ, మానవత్వం వంటి విలువలను మనం అలవరచుకోవచ్చు.
జ్యేష్ఠ పూర్ణిమ రోజున విష్ణు, శివ, లక్ష్మీ, సత్యనారాయణ స్వామి ఆరాధనలు చేయడం కూడా విశేష ఫలితాలను ఇస్తుందని శాస్త్రాలు చెబుతున్నాయి. అనేక మంది ఈ రోజున సత్యనారాయణ వ్రతం, లేదా నారాయణ వ్రతం నిర్వహిస్తారు.

జ్యేష్ఠ పూర్ణిమ రోజున ఒడిశాలోని పూరీ శ్రీ జగన్నాథ స్వామివారి ఆలయంలో వైభవంగా జరిగే స్నానయాత్ర మహోత్సవం కూడా అత్యంత విశిష్టమైనది. ఈ రోజున శ్రీ జగన్నాథుడు, బలభద్రుడు, సుభద్రాదేవి ఉత్సవ విగ్రహాలకు 108 పవిత్ర కలశాల జలాలతో మహాభిషేకం నిర్వహిస్తారు. దీనినే దేవస్నాన పూర్ణిమ అని పిలుస్తారు.
స్నానయాత్ర అనంతరం స్వామివారికి జ్వరము వచ్చినట్లుగా భావించి కొంతకాలం ప్రజా దర్శనానికి విరామం ఇస్తారు. అనంతరం జరిగే నవయౌవన దర్శనం తర్వాత ప్రపంచ ప్రసిద్ధి చెందిన జగన్నాథ రథయాత్ర ప్రారంభమవుతుంది. అందువల్ల జ్యేష్ఠ పూర్ణిమ జగన్నాథ రథయాత్రకు నాందిగా కూడా భావించబడుతుంది.
ఈ విధంగా అధిక జ్యేష్ఠ పూర్ణిమ దానధర్మాలు, వటసావిత్రి వ్రతం, గంగాపూజ, ఏరువాక పండుగ మరియు జగన్నాథ స్వామివారి స్నానయాత్ర వంటి అనేక ఆధ్యాత్మిక విశేషాలను తనలో ఇముడ్చుకున్న మహాపుణ్యదినంగా సనాతన ధర్మంలో ప్రత్యేక స్థానం పొందింది.
