*తాత్పర్యము : జాగ్రదావస్థ యందు ఆత్మ సర్వమునకు ద్రష్టగా అనుభవము కలుచున్నది. కాని సుషుప్తి అవస్థ యందు ఆత్మకు ఉపాధిభూతమైన అహంకారము నశించుటవలన భ్రమపడి తానే నశించినట్లుగా భావించును. తన ధనము పోయిన వ్యక్తి, తానే పోయినట్లుగా తలపోసి మిగుల దుఃఖించును. అట్లే అజ్ఞాని తాను నిద్రలో నశించి పోయినట్లుగా భావించును.*
*వ్యాఖ్య : శరీరాదులు నిద్రపోతే ఆత్మ నిద్రపోతున్నట్లు ఎలా కనపడుతుంది. నశించని వాడు కూడా నశించిన వాడిలా కనిపిస్తాడు. శరీరం నిద్రపోతే ఆత్మ కూడా నిద్రపోయినట్లు అనిపిస్తుంది. ఎలా అంటే డబ్బు మొత్తం పోయిన వాడు "డబ్బు లేకపోతే నేను లేనట్లే" అని ఎలా అనుకుంటాడో (వాడే పోయినట్లు ఎలా అనుకుంటాడో), అహంకారం పోయిన వాడు, తానే పోయాను అనుకుంటాడు. అహంకారం నశించినప్పుడు కూడా వాడే ద్రష్ట. ఇది శరీరం కాదు, ఆత్మ, అని చెప్పేవాడు కూడా వాడే.*

*15. manyamānas tadātmānam anaṣṭo naṣṭavan mṛṣā
naṣṭe 'haṅkaraṇe draṣṭā naṣṭa-vitta ivāturaḥ
*MEANING : The living entity can vividly feel his existence as the seer, but because of the disappearance of the ego during the state of deep sleep, he falsely takes himself to be lost, like a man who has lost his fortune and feels distressed, thinking himself to be lost.*
*PURPORT : Only in ignorance does a living entity think that he is lost. If by attainment of knowledge he comes to the real position of his eternal existence, he knows that he is not lost. An appropriate example is mentioned herein: naṣṭa-vitta ivāturaḥ. A person who has lost a great sum of money may think that he is lost, but actually he is not lost-only his money is lost. But due to his absorption in the money or identification with the money, he thinks that he is lost. Similarly, when we falsely identify with matter as our field of activities, we think that we are lost, although actually we are not. As soon as a person is awakened to the pure knowledge of understanding that he is an eternal servitor of the Lord, his own real position is revived. A living entity can never be lost. When one forgets his identity in deep sleep, he becomes absorbed in dreams, and he may think himself a different person or may think himself lost. But actually his identity is intact. This concept of being lost is due to false ego, and it continues as long as one is not awakened to the sense of his existence as an eternal servitor of the Lord. The Māyāvādī philosophers' concept of becoming one with the Supreme Lord is another symptom of being lost in false ego. One may falsely claim that he is the Supreme Lord, but actually he is not. This is the last snare of māyā's influence upon the living entity. To think oneself equal with the Supreme Lord or to think oneself to be the Supreme Lord Himself is also due to false ego.*

ఓ బ్రహ్మా! అయిదు దినములలో నిశ్చితముగా మృత్యువుచే కబళింపబడువానికి ఈ సర్వము వ్యర్ధమే గదా! మా నిశ్చయ మిట్లున్నది (34).
సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను -
తపశ్శాలురగు ఆ రాక్షసుల ఈ మాటలను విని బ్రహ్మ తన ప్రభువు మరియు కైలాసవాసి యగు శివుని స్మరించి ఇట్లు పలికెను (35).
బ్రహ్మ ఇట్లు పలికెను -
ఓ రాక్షసులారా! సర్వథా మరణము లేకపోవుట సంభవము కాదు. కావున ఈ కోరికనుండి విరమించుకొనుడు. మీకు నచ్చిన మరియొక వరమును కోరుకొనుడు(36). ఓ రాక్షసులారా! భూలోకములో ఎక్కడనైననూ ఇంతకు ముందు పుట్టిన ప్రాణులు గాని, పుట్టబోవు ప్రాణులు గాని ఎవ్వరైననూ జరామరణములు లేనివారు లేరు, ఉండబోరు. ఇది నిశ్చయము (37). కాలునకు కాలుడగు శివుడు, మరియు విష్ణువు తక్క ఇతరులకు మరణము తప్పదు. వారు ధర్మాధర్మములకు అతీతులు, నిర్గుణులు, సగుణరూపమును స్వీకరించినవారు (38). జగత్తును పీడించుట కొరకు తపస్సును చేసినచో, దాని ఫలము చేయి జారి పోవునని ఎరింగి, తపస్సును యోగ్యమగు ఫలము కొరకు చేయదగును (39).
ఓ పుణ్యాత్ములారా! మీరు మీ బుద్ధితో స్వయముగా విచారించుడు. దేవతలకు గాని, రాక్షసులకు గాని పొంద శక్యము గాని దుర్లభమగు వరమును గోరి మృత్యువును ప్రక్కన బెట్టుడు (40). కావున బుద్దిని ఉపయోగించి ఏయే కారణముల వలన మరణము సంభవమో, వాటన్నింటి నుండి వేర్వేరుగా రక్షణ కల్గునట్లు వరమును కోరి ఆ మృత్యుహేతువుల నుండి రక్షణను పొందుడు(41).
సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను -
వారు బ్రహ్మ గారి ఈ మాటలను విని, ముహూర్తకాలము ధ్యానమునందు నిమగ్నులై, తరువాత మరల ఆలోచించి, సర్వలోకములకు పితామహుడగు బ్రహ్మతో నిట్లనిరి(42).
రాక్షసులిట్లునిరి-
హే భతవాన్‌! మేము పరాక్రమ వంతులమే అయిననే, మాకు సుఖముగా నివసించదగిన, శత్రువులు ముట్టడించ శక్యము కాని గృహము లేదు (43). మిక్కిలి అద్భుతమైనవి, సర్వసంపదలతో సంపన్నమైనవి, దేవతలకు జయింపశక్యము కానివి అగు మూడు నగరములను నిర్మించి మాకు ఇమ్ము (44). ఓ లోకనాథా! జగద్గురూ! మేము ఆ నగరములను అధిష్ఠించి నీ అనుగ్రహముచే ఈ భూమినంతనూ పరిభ్రమించెదము (45). అపుడు తారకాక్షుడిట్లనెను: విశ్వకర్మ దేవతలకైననూ భేదింపశక్యము కాని బంగారు వికారమైన నగరమును నాకు నిర్మించి ఇచ్చుగాక! (46)

Brahmā said:—
36. O Asuras, there cannot be invariable indestructibility. Please desist from asking for it. Seek some other boon whatever you wish.
37. O Asuras, a creature is born, dies and will be born surely. But no one will be free from old age or death in this world.
38. Except Śiva the destroyer of Death, and Viṣṇu all else are mortals. These two are the supervisers of virtue and evil and have manifest and unmanifest forms.
39. If penance is performed for the harassment of the world, it shall be understood as gone. It is only a well-performed penance that can be fruitful.
40. Ponder over this keenly, O faultless ones, desist from seeking immortality. Immortality is impossible for the gods and the Asuras. It is inaccessible. It cannot be warded off.
41. Hence choose a boon whereby you shall do something equal to your own strength.[2]
Sanatkumāra said:—
42. On hearing the words of Brahmā, they thought for a while and then replied to the grandfather of all the worlds.
The Asuras said:—
43. O lord, we have no mansion where we can stay happily although we are valorous and invincible to our enemies.
44. Build and give us three wonderful cities richly endowed with wealth and unassailable even to the gods.
45. O Preceptor of the universe, Lord of the worlds, by your grace we shall move about on the earth occupying these cities.
46. Tārakākṣa then said—“Let Viśvakarmā make a city which cannot be broken even by the gods. Let that golden city be mine”.
