*కుర్వన్ దుఃఖప్రతీకారం సుఖవన్మన్యతే గృహీ॥*
*తాత్పర్యము : గృహస్థుడు దుఃఖకారకములైన కుహనాధర్మముల ఆచరణలో మునుగు చుండును. ఒక్కొక్కసారి ఆ దుఃఖముల నివారణకై తాను చేయు ప్రయత్నములో కృతకృత్యుడైనచో, అతడు దానిని సుఖమని భావించును.*

*09. gṛheṣu kūṭa-dharmeṣu duḥkha-tantreṣv atandritaḥ*
*kurvan duḥkha-pratīkāraṁ sukhavan manyate gṛhī*
*MEANING : The attached householder remains in his family life, which is full of diplomacy and politics. Always spreading miseries and controlled by acts of sense gratification, he acts just to counteract the reactions of all his miseries, and if he can successfully counteract such miseries, he thinks that he is happy.*
*PURPORT : In Bhagavad-gītā the Godhead Himself certifies the material world as an impermanent place that is full of miseries. There is no question of happiness in this material world, either individually or in terms of family, society or country. If something is going on in the name of happiness, that is also illusion. Here in this material world, happiness means successful counteraction to the effects of distress. The material world is so made that unless one becomes a clever diplomat, his life will be a failure. Not to speak of human society, even the society of lower animals, the birds and bees, cleverly manages its bodily demands of eating, sleeping and mating. Human society competes nationally or individually, and in the attempt to be successful the entire human society becomes full of diplomacy. We should always remember that in spite of all diplomacy and all intelligence in the struggle for our existence, everything will end in a second by the supreme will. Therefore, all our attempts to become happy in this material world are simply a delusion offered by māyā. *

*Human life is a process of knowledge. All knowledge implies a subject or a knower, whose relation to an object manifests knowledge. The existence of the knower in an act of knowledge cannot be doubted, for without a knower there is no knowledge, and without knowledge there is no experience. The whole of one’s life is constituted of various forms of experience, and all experience is attended with consciousness. Consciousness has always to be in relation with the subject or the knower.*
*Without a knowing self there is no objective knowledge. The experience of a world outside would become impossible if it is not to be given to a knowing subject. The fact of the known implies the truth of a knower. Even thinking would lose its meaning without our tacitly admitting the existence of our own self. This self reveals itself as the centre of all the knowledge which illumines every form of human activity. All activities can, ultimately, be reduced to a kind of knowledge. It is some form of knowledge that fulfils itself through external action.*

*🌴. Destroying the impurities in the tattvas such as kala and renouncing them, one should engage in the purification of the body. 🌴*
*Saṁhāraḥ in this sūtra means annihilation of gross body into subtle body; and subtle body into casual body and ultimately leaving nothing to be annihilated. This process can be compared to the three stages of consciousness – awake, dream and deep sleep. When one enters the stage of deep sleep, each stage is dissolved into the next higher. This sūtra says that this process of stage by stage annihilation should be contemplated in the arena of mind where ultimately nothing is left for contemplation and dissolution. He now enters the state of void and this is the point where Śiva is realised.*
