కృష్ణుడి ఛాయతో పోల్చడానికి ఈ అందమైన నీలం పువ్వు సంస్కృత సాహిత్యంలో ప్రసిద్ధి చెందింది. కృష్ణుని స్తుతిలో ఒక ప్రసిద్ధ శ్లోకం అతసీపుష్పసంకాశం హారనూపురశోభితం "అటాసి పుష్ప సంకాసం హార నూపుర శోభితం". ఈ పువ్వు, నీలిరంగు సీతాకోకచిలుక-బఠానీ పువ్వు, అపరాజితతో పాటు, దుర్గాదేవి ఆరాధనలో కూడా ప్రసిద్ది చెందింది (దీనిని కొన్నిసార్లు కృష్ణుని "అంశ" (అంश)గా కూడా పరిగణిస్తారు).
Flax plant is grown both for its seed and for its fibres. Interestingly, the species name usitatissimum means, most useful. Various parts of the plant have been used to make fabric, dye, paper, medicines, fishing nets and soap. The oil extracted from the seed is used in cooking, as linseed oil or flaxseed oil.
