*తాత్పర్యము : ఈ కాలఫురుషునకు మిత్రుడుగాని, శత్రువుగాని, ఆత్మీయుడుగాని ఎవ్వరును లేరు. అనగా ఆయనకు అందరును సమానులే. ఆయన సర్వదా జాగరూకుడై యుండును. ఆత్మరూపుడైన భగవానుని మరచి, భోగభాగ్యములలో ప్రమత్తులైన ప్రాణులను, ఆక్రమించి, అతడు వారిని సంహరించును*

*āviśaty apramatto 'sau pramattaṁ janam anta-kṛt*
*MEANING : No one is dear to the Supreme Personality of Godhead, nor is anyone His enemy or friend. But He gives inspiration to those who have not forgotten Him and destroys those who have.*
*PURPORT : Forgetfulness of one's relationship with Lord Viṣṇu, the Supreme Personality of Godhead, is the cause of one's repeated birth and death. A living entity is as eternal as the Supreme Lord, but due to his forgetfulness he is put into this material nature and transmigrates from one body to another, and when the body is destroyed, he thinks that he is also destroyed. Actually, this forgetfulness of his relationship with Lord Viṣṇu is the cause of his destruction. Anyone who revives his consciousness of the original relationship receives inspiration from the Lord. This does not mean that the Lord is someone's enemy and someone else's friend. He helps everyone; one who is not bewildered by the influence of material energy is saved, and one who is bewildered is destroyed. It is said, therefore, hariṁ vinā na mṛtim taranti: no one can be saved from the repetition of birth and death without the help of the Supreme Lord. It is therefore the duty of all living entities to take shelter of the lotus feet of Viṣṇu and thus save themselves from the cycle of birth and death.*

*Philosophy is a complete world-view, a Weltanschauung, a general attitude of intellect, will and feeling, to life. It gives an explanation of the universe at large, by appealing to what is discoverable as the deepest of known facts. It is not a mere description of the details or bits of physical observation. We call an explanation philosophical when it is broad enough to be harmoniously related to the other views of life and fulfils the needs of all the faculties of man to the highest degree of satisfaction, using ultimate principles, and not mere empirical facts, in establishing its validity.*
*“Philosophy, indeed, in one sense of the term, is only a compendious name for the spirit in education,” says William James. It is only in this sense of the process of the education and unfoldment of the spiritual spark in man that philosophy is worth its name. To teach a doctrine in a dogmatic and forced way is one thing, and to do it in a rational and appealing way in its greatest fullness is another. The latter is the task and the way of philosophy.*

*As already discussed, Śiva Sūtra-s consists of three sections. The first section deals with sāmbhavopāya, second section deals with śāktaopāya and the third section deals with āṇavopāya. Upāya means the path that is being pursued. All the three paths have been discussed under introduction to Śiva Sūtra. The third and final section deals with āṇavopāya, which talks about actions and is considered as the lowest amongst the three. Spiritual progression begins with āṇavopāya, moves up to śāktaopāya and culminates at sāmbhavopāya. Āṇava has originated from the word āṇa, which means minute, which refers to self. An individual self begins his spiritual practice from āṇavopāya. There are forty five aphorisms in this section.*
