*వినిష్క్రామతి కృచ్ఛ్రేణ నిరుచ్ఛ్వాసో హతస్మృతిః॥*
*తాత్పర్యము :ప్రసూతి వాయువు చేత బలముగా నెట్టబడిన ఆ శిశువు ఆతురతతో అధోముఖుడై అతి కష్టము మీద బహిర్గతుడగును. అతని శ్వాసగతి ఆగిపోవును. ఇప్పుడు పూర్వస్మృతిని కోల్పోవును.*
*వ్యాఖ్య : కృచ్ఛ్రేణ అనే పదానికి అర్థం 'చాలా కష్టంతో అని.' పిల్లవాడు పొత్తికడుపు నుండి ఇరుకైన మార్గం ద్వారా బయటకు వచ్చినప్పుడు, అక్కడ ఒత్తిడి కారణంగా శ్వాస వ్యవస్థ పూర్తిగా ఆగిపోతుంది మరియు వేదన కారణంగా పిల్లవాడు తన జ్ఞాపకశక్తిని కోల్పోతాడు. కొన్నిసార్లు ఇబ్బంది చాలా తీవ్రంగా ఉంటుంది, పిల్లవాడు చనిపోయాడు లేదా దాదాపు చనిపోతాడు. ప్రసవ వేదన ఎలా ఉంటుందో ఊహించుకోవచ్చు. ఆ భయంకరమైన స్థితిలో ఆ బిడ్డ పది నెలల పాటు కడుపు లోపల ఉండి, పది నెలల తర్వాత బలవంతంగా బయటకు నెట్టబడతాడు. భగవద్గీతలో భగవంతుడు, ఆధ్యాత్మిక స్పృహలో పురోగతి గురించి తీవ్రంగా ఆలోచించే వ్యక్తి జననం, మరణం, వ్యాధి మరియు వృద్ధాప్యం అనే నాలుగు బాధలను ఎల్లప్పుడూ పరిగణించాలని సూచించాడు. భౌతికవాది అనేక విధాలుగా అభివృద్ధి చెందుతాడు, కానీ భౌతిక ఉనికిలో అంతర్లీనంగా ఉన్న ఈ నాలుగు బాధల సూత్రాలను అతను ఆపలేడు.*

*23. tenāvasṛṣṭaḥ sahasā kṛtvāvāk śira āturaḥ*
*viniṣkrāmati kṛuchreṇa nirucchvāso hata-smṛtiḥ*
*MEANING : Pushed downward all of a sudden by the wind, the child comes out with great trouble, head downward, breathless and deprived of memory due to severe agony.*
*PURPORT : The word kṛuchreṇa means "with great difficulty." When the child comes out of the abdomen through the narrow passage, due to pressure there the breathing system completely stops, and due to agony the child loses his memory. Sometimes the trouble is so severe that the child comes Out dead or almost dead. One can imagine what the pangs of birth are like. The child remains for ten months in that horrible condition within the abdomen, and at the end of ten months he is forcibly pushed out. In Bhagavad-gītā the Lord points out that a person who is serious about advancement in spiritual consciousness should always consider the four pangs of birth, death, disease and old age. The materialist advances in many ways, but he is unable to stop these four principles of suffering inherent in material existence.*

*The jiva principle within us has the double characteristic of mortality and immortality. We are mortals and immortals at the same time. It is the mortal element in us that causes sorrow when it comes in contact with the immortal urge that seeks its own expression in its own manner. There is a tremendous friction, as it were, taking place between the subjective feelings and the objective cosmos. No one can know the strength of the universe. The mind cannot imagine it, and we are trying to overstep it. We can stretch our imagination and try to bring to our memories what could be the magnitude of this task.*
*We as individuals, as we appear to be, are girding up our loins to face the powers of the whole universe—a single Arujna facing the entire Kaurava forces, as it were. Yes, Arjuna had the strength, and also he had no strength. If Arjuna stood alone, he could be blown off in one day by a man like Bhishma. Well, Duryodhana pleaded every day before Bhishma and cried aloud, “Grandsire, you are alive, and even when you are alive, thousands and thousands of our kith and kin are being massacred.
