Swami Magananand Ji (Kunwar Virendra Singh Ji, Kota)
Shri Swami Magananand Ji Maharaj renounced worldly life at a very young age and embraced a life of renunciation and spiritual discipline. He lived for nearly 12–14 years in the regions extending from Kota to Khatoli and from Gwalior to Sheopur, where he eventually left his physical body. About seven miles from Khatoli lies a sacred place dedicated to Lord Shiva. Since the area was filled with Dhaukada trees, it came to be known as Dhaukadeshwar Mahadev. This place was completely isolated, and tigers and other wild animals commonly roamed the surrounding forests.
Swamiji often said, “This is a Siddha Peeth (a spiritually perfected place), and that is why I left Nashik and came here.” Even today, anyone over forty years of age in that region, upon hearing Swamiji’s name, becomes filled with devotion and reverence. It was widely known that he had attained spiritual perfection through Gayatri worship. Devotees and spiritually inclined people of the area continue to share many remarkable stories of his divine accomplishments.
A landlord from the Khatoli region was once involved in a land dispute that had ruined his financial condition. When the landlord approached the officer regarding his case, he was humiliated and thrown out of the office.
Filled with despair, the landlord wandered through Bharatpur until he happened to meet Swami Magananand Ji. Seeing his troubled condition, Swamiji asked him, “Are you hungry?” The man replied that he was. Swamiji then took a walnut from his sacred yogic fire (Dhuni) and gave it to him. Astonishingly, after eating that single walnut, his hunger was completely satisfied.
The landlord then shared his sorrows and difficulties with Swamiji. After listening calmly, Swamiji spoke with detachment and authority: “Tomorrow that agent himself will call you and give a judgment in your favor.” Exactly as predicted, the next day the officer personally summoned the landlord and ordered that his confiscated land be returned to him.
About a year later, Swamiji returned to the area. The grateful landlord welcomed him into his home with great devotion and served him for the rest of his life. Even today, the eternal sacred fire brought from Swamiji’s Dhuni continues to burn in their home, and they never allow it to be extinguished.
Another incident concerns my grandfather, who was a man of pure heart and deeply devoted to serving saints. He regularly remained in Swamiji’s service. One day, while he was going to visit Swamiji, my uncle—then a five-year-old child—unknowingly followed behind him. My grandfather was unaware that the child had come along.
On the way, they came across a river. My grandfather crossed it safely, but while trying to cross, my young uncle was swept away and began drowning in the middle of the river.
Even today, my uncle says, “While I was drowning, I felt as though a saintly figure held my hand and brought me safely out.” In this way, he survived. When my grandfather reached Swamiji, Swamiji immediately asked him in anger, “Why do you bring children with you?” Surprised, my grandfather replied, “I did not bring any child.”
A short while later, my uncle arrived and narrated what had happened. It became evident that Swamiji, through his subtle spiritual body, had protected the child from drowning.
There are many more such incidents associated with Swamiji, far too many to be fully described in a short article like this.
The greatness of Gayatri worship is beyond measure. Through it, both householders a nd saints can attain higher states of spiritual realization and inner awakening.
