According to various sources, every human being possesses not only a physical body but also another invisible body, commonly referred to in English as the Doppelgänger. Under normal circumstances, this invisible body cannot be seen by ordinary human eyes. However, under certain exceptional conditions or during sudden accidents, it is said to become visible to people in the physical world.
Now, let us explore the subtle body and the fascinating phenomenon of the Doppelgänger in greater detail.
The Four Bodies of a Human Being
According to the sources, a human being consists of four different bodies.
Physical Body (Gross Body): The visible material body that we normally see.
Subtle Body (Linga Sharira): Also referred to as the Doppelgänger.
Mental Body: The body associated with the mind and thoughts.
Intellectual Body: The body related to intelligence, discrimination, and higher reasoning.
The Prāṇamaya Kośa (Etheric Body)
Structure
The Prāṇamaya Kośa, also known as the Etheric Body, is formed by the energetic sheath surrounding every cell of the physical body. It serves as an energetic mold, much like a clay mold used to shape a statue, and closely resembles the physical form.
Position
This subtle layer is believed to extend approximately three to four inches beyond the surface of the skin. It remains invisible to ordinary physical vision.
Characteristics
This body is also known as the Etheric Double. It is generally described as having a violet or grayish appearance. It does not function independently but remains completely connected to and devoted to the physical body.
Chakras
According to these teachings, the six primary chakras located along the spine do not actually exist within the physical body itself. Instead, they are situated within the Etheric Body.
When Does the Doppelgänger Become Visible?
Special Circumstances
Doppelgängers are said to appear when a person experiences extreme mental stress, severe exhaustion, or complete physical depletion. Such appearances are traditionally reported to occur most often around sunset or near midnight.
Separation from the Physical Body
It is believed that under the influence of narcotic substances, hypnosis, or severe accidents, the Etheric Double may temporarily separate from the physical body and stand at some distance from it.
One reported case from Germany describes a man who suffered a severe electric shock. During the incident, an image resembling his Doppelgänger, apparently attempting to leave the body, was reportedly photographed.
Vardøger – The One Who Goes Ahead
Another phenomenon related to the Doppelgänger is known as the Vardøger.
According to this belief, when a person intensely desires to visit a particular place, the force of that intention may cause the Doppelgänger to arrive there before the individual does. People present at that location may report seeing the person even though the actual individual has not yet arrived.

Gordon Burroughs (1947)
American researcher Gordon Burroughs was reportedly driving while suffering from extreme fatigue. According to the account, his Doppelgänger appeared beside him like a fellow traveler and took control of the vehicle, helping him reach safety.
John Donne (1612)
The famous English poet John Donne was staying in Paris when he reportedly saw an apparition of his wife in London holding a deceased infant. Later, he learned that his wife had indeed given birth to a stillborn child.
Ruskin Bond
During a writers' gathering, several people reportedly claimed to have seen author Ruskin Bond attending the event. However, it was later confirmed that he had been asleep in his room at the time.
According to these traditions, Doppelgängers are considered the ghost-like counterparts of living human beings. While a person is alive, they are described as transparent and subtle in nature. After death, they are believed to assume a denser form and become what many traditions refer to as spirits.
These subtle counterparts are said to behave in exactly the same manner as the individuals to whom they belong.
