✍️ Prasad BharadwajIn the ancient Sanatana tradition of India, the great oceans hold an extremely sacred place. Oceans are not merely vast bodies of water; the Puranas describe them as abodes of divine power, symbols of the mysteries of creation, and representations of infinity itself.
The Vedas, Upanishads, and Puranas portray the oceans as reflections of universal consciousness. The very word “Samudra” signifies vastness, depth, and boundlessness. Ancient sages compared human life itself to an ocean, saying that countless mysteries remain hidden within it.
According to the Puranas, in the beginning of creation, the entire universe existed in the form of cosmic waters. This infinite oceanic expanse was known as “Karana Jalam” or the “Pralaya Sagara” — the Ocean of Dissolution. Upon these divine waters, Lord Mahavishnu rested in yogic slumber upon Adishesha. From His navel emerged a lotus upon which Lord Brahma was born, initiating the process of creation. Through this sacred narrative, Indian philosophy reveals that the ocean is the very foundation of creation itself.
One of the most celebrated episodes in the Puranas is the “Ksheera Sagara Mathanam” — the Churning of the Ocean of Milk. When the Devas and Asuras churned the cosmic ocean together, numerous divine treasures emerged from it. Kamadhenu, the celestial horse Uchchaihshravas, Airavata, Goddess Lakshmi, the Moon, and the pot of Amrita (nectar of immortality) all arose from the ocean. This story symbolizes the ocean as the source of immeasurable wealth and divine abundance. Furthermore, the churning of the ocean serves as a profound metaphor for human life itself. When one churns the depths of the inner self, spiritual wisdom, strength, and the nectar-like realization of divine consciousness emerge.
The Puranas also state that Goddess Mahalakshmi herself emerged from the Ksheera Sagara. Therefore, the ocean is regarded as a symbol of prosperity, auspiciousness, and divine grace. This is one reason why many temples of Goddess Lakshmi are found near coastal regions. The sacred verse “Samudra Vasane Devi,” which describes Mother Earth as one clothed in oceans, further highlights the sanctity and divine significance of the seas.
The oceans also occupy a revered place in Indian epics. In the Ramayana, Lord Rama prayed to the Ocean God before crossing over to Lanka. He observed penance and fasting for three days seeking the ocean’s blessings. Eventually, the Ocean God appeared and guided the Vanara Sena toward a path across the sea. This episode teaches the importance of humility and reverence toward the forces of nature. Indian culture does not teach humanity to conquer nature, but to live in harmony with it.
In the Mahabharata too, oceans are described as symbols of universal grandeur and glory. The sacred city of Dwaraka, where Lord Krishna resided, was built along the seashore. According to the Puranas, Dwaraka later submerged into the ocean. This event conveys a timeless truth — no civilization, however great, remains permanent before the wheel of time.
The concept of the “Sapta Samudras” or Seven Oceans is also found in Indian scriptures. The oceans of salt, sugarcane juice, wine, clarified butter, curd, milk, and honey are believed to symbolize various states of consciousness within the universe. Spiritual philosophers explain that these are not merely physical oceans, but symbolic representations of different levels of human awareness and cosmic existence.
In Indian yogic philosophy as well, the ocean holds deep significance. The human mind is often compared to a restless ocean. Just as waves constantly rise and fall upon the sea, thoughts continuously surge within the mind. Yogis explain that through meditation, when these waves become calm, the true nature of the Self is realized. This is why many sages and spiritual seekers performed penance along seashores and oceanic regions.
The Puranas taught humanity not to fear the ocean, but to revere it. The ocean is a symbol of nature’s greatness. It is the source of life, a treasure house of wealth, and an embodiment of spirituality. Yet in modern times, humanity has begun polluting the oceans and disturbing the balance of nature. Plastic waste, chemical pollution, and the destruction of marine life stand as examples of human selfishness and irresponsibility.
On the occasion of World Oceans Day, we must remember the wisdom of the ancient scriptures. We must revive the cultural vision that saw the ocean as a divine manifestation. Protecting the oceans means protecting nature itself; and protecting nature means safeguarding the future of humanity.
Modern society too recognizes the immense importance of oceans. Nature is the primary foundation for life on Earth, and among all of nature’s wonders, the oceans are the most vast and magnificent. Nearly 71 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by oceans, which is why our planet is often called the “Blue Planet.” Human civilization, climate balance, food security, economy, biodiversity, and countless other aspects of life depend upon the oceans. Oceans are not merely reservoirs of water; they are the life-support systems that sustain existence on Earth.
Scientists state that more than half of the oxygen we breathe originates from the oceans. Tiny marine organisms, especially phytoplankton and microscopic algae, produce oxygen through photosynthesis. Therefore, oceans can truly be described as the “lungs of the Earth.”
Thus, thousands of years ago, Indian scriptures described the oceans as symbols of divine consciousness and the source of life itself. Modern science today confirms the very same truth from another perspective. Therefore, protecting the oceans is not merely about preserving nature — it is about safeguarding the future of humanity itself.
