In this video, we discuss the 8th verse from the first chapter of the Ashtavakra Gita, focusing on the concept of renouncing the ego-driven belief of "I am the doer" and embracing the nectar-like realization of "We are the Supreme Witness" to achieve self-knowledge.
We experience the world through the filter of our senses—by seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, and thinking. These experiences create attachments, and we begin to identify ourselves with our senses, mind, and the ever-changing material world. This attachment clouds our understanding of our true essence.
However, the truth is that these experiences are external and transient. The sights we see, the sounds we hear, and even the thoughts we think are simply passing phenomena, like clouds drifting across the sky. They appear and disappear, but the sky remains unchanged. Similarly, our senses and mind are tools of perception, not our identity.
Our true nature lies beyond these fleeting experiences. We are not the body, not the mind, not the thoughts or emotions we feel. We are the eternal self, the pure and unchanging soul—the Supreme Witness to all that unfolds in the world.
Realizing this truth means understanding that we are the observer, not the observed; the knower, not the known. By detaching from the identification with the senses and mind, we free ourselves from the bondage of material illusions. This realization brings clarity, peace, and liberation, as we reconnect with our true self.
