The root cause of much of our suffering lies in the influence of the ego. The ego, driven by a sense of identity and attachment, compels a person to chase after endless desires, believing that their fulfillment will bring lasting happiness. However, this pursuit often leads to complications, such as inner turmoil, conflict with others, and a cycle of dissatisfaction.

Desires, by their nature, are transient and insatiable. When one desire is fulfilled, another quickly takes its place, perpetuating a never-ending quest for external validation and material gain. This relentless chase leaves little room for peace, contentment, or true self-awareness.

To rise above this cycle, one must cultivate the witness attitude. What does this mean? It involves stepping back mentally and emotionally to observe your thoughts, emotions, and actions as though you were an impartial spectator. This perspective allows you to see your experiences objectively, free from the biases of personal involvement.

When you practice the witness attitude, you learn to detach from the ego-driven impulses that bind you to desires and expectations. You recognize that these are fleeting phenomena, arising and dissolving like waves on the surface of the ocean. Instead of identifying with them, you can let them pass without being disturbed.

This attitude doesn’t mean passivity or indifference. Instead, it grants clarity and equanimity, enabling you to act with wisdom and purpose. By adopting the witness perspective, you free yourself from the unnecessary suffering caused by attachment and aversion. Over time, this practice leads to inner peace, resilience, and a deeper connection with your true self—the unchanging awareness that lies beyond the ego.

In the stillness of observation, you find liberation. Adopting the witness attitude is not just a way to escape suffering but a path to discovering the eternal joy and freedom that is your true nature.
