Sri Rama Dootam Shirasaa Namaami ॥I bow my head to Lord Hanuman, who is as swift as the mind, as fast as the wind, who has conquered his senses, who is the श्रेष्ठ among the wise, the son of Vayu, the leader of the Vanara army, and the divine messenger of Lord Rama.
Hanuman Vijayotsavam, one of the most sacred festivals in Hindu tradition, is celebrated with deep devotion as He Found Sita Mata in the Lanka, the embodiment of courage, selfless service, and unwavering devotion. This auspicious day is observed as a “festival of victory” (Vijayotsavam). According to tradition, after Lord Rama was crowned in Ayodhya, he also grandly celebrated a victory festival on Chaitra Purnima in honor of Hanuman, who played a crucial role in finding Sita Mata in Lanka, upholding dharma, truth, and devotion. Since then, this day has been observed as a sacred Vijayotsavam.
Hanuman Vijayotsavam: In North India, Hanuman Jayanti is observed on the full moon day (Chaitra Purnima). The same occasion is referred to as Hanuman Vijayotsavam by us. In Odisha, people believe that Hanuman Jayanti falls on Mesha Sankranti. In Tamil Nadu, it is celebrated on the new moon day (Amavasya) of the Margashirsha month. In Karnataka, devotees observe it on the Shukla Trayodashi (13th day of the bright fortnight) in Margashirsha. In Telugu traditions, there is also a practice of observing Hanuman Vratham on that day. Additionally, in the month of Jyeshtha, the celestial wedding of Suvarchala Devi and Lord Hanuman is celebrated.
Lord Hanuman, the son of Vayu Deva and born to Anjana Devi, is a divine manifestation of strength, wisdom, and devotion. From childhood, he displayed extraordinary power and intelligence. The famous incident where he leaped towards the Sun, thinking it to be a fruit, reflects his immense strength. At the same time, he exemplified humility, discipline, and deep respect for his Guru. These qualities made him truly exceptional.
In the Ramayana, Hanuman’s role is central and indispensable. His devotion to Lord Rama is unmatched. His heroic deeds—discovering Sita Devi, entering Lanka, defeating demons, and setting Lanka ablaze—showcase his valor. Most notably, his leap across the ocean stands as a symbol of determination and fearless resolve. These glorious achievements are why Hanuman Jayanti is also revered as a festival of victory.
The full moon day of the Chaitra month is also known as “Maha Chaitri.” Scriptures mention that on this very day, after the defeat of Ravana and return to Ayodhya, Lord Rama organized a grand celebration to honor Hanuman’s invaluable service to Find Sita.
On Hanuman Jayanti, devotees observe fasting, visit temples of Lord Hanuman, and perform special prayers. Recitation of the Hanuman Chalisa and Sundara Kanda is considered highly auspicious. Many also engage in charity and service activities. It is believed that by the grace of Hanuman, fear is removed, courage is strengthened, and success is attained in life.
Chanting the mantra “Sri Rama Dootaya Hanumate Namah” at least 21 times is believed to bestow protection and victory.
Hanuman is not merely a symbol of physical strength, but also of inner power, righteousness, devotion to the गुरु, and selfless service. His life teaches us a profound truth—“With true devotion, nothing is impossible.” On this sacred occasion, we should strive to imbibe his noble qualities and walk the path of dharma.
Thus, Hanuman Jayanti Vijayotsavam stands as a reminder of four great values—devotion, courage, service, and humility. May the blessings of Lord Hanuman bring health, happiness, and success to all…
