01. శ్రీ భగవానువాచ

ఊర్థ్వమూలమధశ్శాఖమశ్వత్థం ప్రాహురవ్యయమ్ |
ఛన్దాంసి యస్య పర్ణాణి యస్తం వేద స వేదవిత్ ||

🌷. తాత్పర్యం : పూర్ణపురుషోత్తముడగు శ్రీకృష్ణభగవానుడు పలికెను : వ్రేళ్ళు ఊర్థ్వముగను, శాఖలు క్రిందుగను, వేదఋక్కులే ఆకులుగను కలిగిన శాశ్వతమైన అశ్వత్థవృక్షమొకటి కలదని చెప్పబడును. ఆ వృక్షము నెరిగినవాడే వేదముల నెరిగినవాడు.

🌷. భాష్యము : భక్తియోగపు ప్రాముఖ్యమును చర్చించిన పిమ్మట ఎవరైనను “వేదముల ప్రయోజనమేమిటి?” యని ప్రశ్నించవచ్చును. అందుకు సమాధానముగా వేదాధ్యయన ప్రయోజనము శ్రీకృష్ణుని ఎరుగుటయేనని ఈ అధ్యాయమున వివరింపబడినది. అనగా కృష్ణభక్తిరసభావితుడై భక్తియోగమునందు నియుక్తుడైనవాడు వేదములను ఎరిగియే యుండును.

భౌతికజగత్తు బంధము ఇచ్చట అశ్వత్థవృక్షముతో పోల్చబడినది. కామ్యకర్మల యందు రతుడైనవాడు ఈ అశ్వత్థవృక్షపు తుదిని తెలియక ఒకకొమ్మ నుండి వేరొకకొమ్మకు సదా మారుచుండును. అనగా భౌతికజగమను ఈ అశ్వత్థవృక్షమునకు అంతమనునది లేదు. అట్టి ఈ వృక్షమునందు ఆసక్తుడైనవానికి ముక్తి లభించు నవకాశమే లేదు.

ఆత్మోద్దారమునకై ఉద్దేశింపబడిన వేదమంత్రములు ఈ వృక్షపు ఆకులుగా పేర్కొనబడినవి. విశ్వము యొక్క అత్యున్నత లోకమైన బ్రహ్మలోకము నుండి ఆరంభమగుటుచే దీని వ్రేళ్ళు ఊర్థ్వముగా నున్నవి. అవ్యయమైన ఈ మాయావృక్షమును అవగతము చేసికొనినచో మనుజుడు దాని నుండి బయటపడగలడు.

🌴 Chapter 15 - Purushothama Yoga - 01 🌴

01. śrī-bhagavān uvāca

ūrdhva-mūlam adhaḥ-śākham aśvatthaṁ prāhur avyayam
chandāṁsi yasya parṇāni yas taṁ veda sa veda-vit

🌷 Translation : The Supreme Personality of Godhead said: It is said that there is an imperishable banyan tree that has its roots upward and its branches down and whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. One who knows this tree is the knower of the Vedas.

🌹 Purport : After the discussion of the importance of bhakti-yoga, one may question, “What about the Vedas?” It is explained in this chapter that the purpose of Vedic study is to understand Kṛṣṇa. Therefore one who is in Kṛṣṇa consciousness, who is engaged in devotional service, already knows the Vedas.

The entanglement of this material world is compared here to a banyan tree. For one who is engaged in fruitive activities, there is no end to the banyan tree. He wanders from one branch to another, to another, to another. The tree of this material world has no end, and for one who is attached to this tree, there is no possibility of liberation. The Vedic hymns, meant for elevating oneself, are called the leaves of this tree.

This tree’s roots grow upward because they begin from where Brahmā is located, the topmost planet of this universe. If one can understand this indestructible tree of illusion, then one can get out of it.
