*తాత్పర్యము : అచేతనములైన పాషాణాదుల కంటె ప్రాణము గలది గొప్పవి. వాటి కంటెను శ్వాసక్రియ నడుపునవి గొప్పవి. వాటి కంటెను మనస్సుచే ఆలోచింప గల ప్రాణులు గొప్పవి. వాటికంటెను ఇంద్రియ వృత్తులు గలవి శ్రేష్ఠములు.*

*tataḥ sa-cittāḥ pravarās tataś cendriya-vṛttayaḥ*
*MEANING : Living entities are superior to inanimate objects, O blessed mother, and among them, living entities who display life symptoms are better. Animals with developed consciousness are better than them, and better still are those who have developed sense perception.*
*PURPORT : The living are greater than the dead (even in the natural deluge those who died are greater. In the Naimittika pralaya when Brahma is evening there is no Bhuh Bhuvah Swah), those who have life are greater than those who are alive (eg: living beings are better than rocks) those who have mind are greater than those who have life (trees have life but no mind) Those who have sense knowledge are better than those who have mind (some trees see, some trees bend when man comes, some trees bend because of smell).*
*The first division is made between dead, stonelike matter and the living organism. A living organism is sometimes manifested even in stone. Experience shows that some hills and mountains grow. This is due to the presence of the soul within that stone. Above that, the next manifestation of the living condition is development of consciousness, and the next manifestation is the development of sense perception. In the Mokṣa-dharma section of the Mahābhārata it is stated that trees have developed sense perception; they can see and smell. We know by experience that trees can see. Sometimes in its growth a large tree changes its course of development to avoid some hindrances. This means that a tree can see, and according to Mahābhārata, a tree can also smell. This indicates the development of sense perception.*

1. When the great Asura was ruling over the Earth virtuously, the gods were reduced to be mere slaves, O great sage.
2. The distressed gods mentally sought refuge in Śiva the benefactor, lord of gods and of everyone.
3. They eulogised the great lord, the bestower of everything and favourably disposed to his devotees, by means of pleasant words.
4. The great lord, the bestower of all desires to his devotees called Nārada and commissioned him with a desire to carry out the task of the gods.
5. Then the celestial sage, the wise devotee of Śiva, the goal of the good, went to the gods in the city of the Asuras at the bidding of Śiva.
6. On seeing the sage Nārada coming, the distressed gods, Indra and others, stood up.
7. After bowing to the sage, Indra and other gods, their anxiety apparently manifest in their faces, offered a seat to Nārada.
8. After bowing to Nārada the great sage who sat comfortably, the distressed gods, Indra and others spoke to him again.
