Mohini Ekadashi is observed on the eleventh day (Ekadashi) of the bright fortnight in the month of Vaishakha and It is closely associated with the divine enchantress form of Lord Vishnu—Mohini—who symbolizes the mysterious power of illusion, or Maya, used for the preservation of Dharma. This sacred day is not merely about fasting, but about purifying the mind and transcending the illusions that bind human life.

The origin of Mohini Ekadashi is rooted in the legendary event of Samudra Manthan. During this both Devas and Asuras sought the nectar of immortality, Amrita. When a conflict arose over its possession, Lord Vishnu assumed the mesmerizing form of Mohini. Through her divine beauty and charm, she captivated the Asuras and skillfully ensured that the nectar was distributed only among the Devas, thereby protecting the balance of the universe. In this episode, the Asura Rahu disguised himself to partake in the nectar, but was ultimately exposed, giving rise to the mythological explanation of eclipses.

Spiritually, Mohini Ekadashi conveys profound lessons about life and consciousness. It reminds devotees that the world is full of attractions and illusions that can easily mislead the mind. Mohini represents that very illusion, yet in the hands of the divine, it becomes a tool to uphold righteousness. This teaches that wisdom and discernment are more powerful than brute force. Observing this Ekadashi is believed to cleanse past sins, reduce the burden of karma, and guide the soul toward liberation. It encourages detachment from material desires and a deeper connection with spiritual truth.

Ultimately, It teaches that within each individual lies the ability to overcome illusion through awareness and devotion. Just as Lord Vishnu used the form of Mohini to restore cosmic order, one must use wisdom to navigate the illusions of life and remain aligned with Dharma.
