*స్వాభాసేన యథా సూర్యో జలస్థేన దివి స్థితః॥*
*తాత్పర్యము : జలముల యందు ప్రతిబింబించుచున్న సూర్యబింబము గోడపై పడినప్పుడు అది జలముల యందు సూర్య ప్రతిబింబమునకు అభాస మాత్రమే. జలములలో కనబడు ప్రతిబింబము ద్వారా ఆకాశము నందలి సూర్యుడు తెలియ బడుచున్నాడు. అలాగే శరీరములో ఉన్న ఆత్మలో అంతర్యామిగా ఉన్న పరమాత్మే, "ఇది ఆత్మా", అని చెబుతాడు, అది ఉన్న శరీరం ఆభాసమూ అని చెబుతాడు, ఆ శరీరములో ఉన్న తననీ చూపుతాడు.*
*వ్యాఖ్య : నీటిలో సూర్య ప్రతిబింబాన్ని చూస్తున్నాము. అన్నిటినీ చూపే వెలుగుతోటే నీటిలో ఉన్న సూర్యుని చూస్తున్నాము. ఆకాశములో ఉన్న సూర్యుని చేతనే నీటిలో ఉన్న సూర్యున్నీ చూస్తున్నాము. సూర్యభగవానుడే నీటి ప్రతిబింబాన్నీ చూపుతాడూ, ఆ సూర్యభగవానుడే, తన నిజమైన స్వరూపాన్నీ చూపుతాడు. అలాగే, దేహములో ఆత్మ స్వరూపాన్ని, ఆత్మలో అంతర్యామిగా ఉన్న పరమాత్మే చూపుతాడు. ఆత్మలోని పరమాత్మ జ్ఞ్యానమూ, ఆత్మలోని పరమాత్మ వలన కలిగే ఆత్మ జ్ఞ్యానమూ, ఈ రెండూ పరమాత్మ వలననే కలుగుతాయి. శరీరములో ఉన్న ఆత్మలో అంతర్యామిగా ఉన్న పరమాత్మే, "ఇది ఆత్మా", అని చెబుతాడు, అది ఉన్న శరీరం ఆభాసమూ అని చెబుతాడు, ఆ శరీరములో ఉన్న తననీ చూపుతాడు.*

*svābhāsena tathā sūryo jala-sthena divi sthitaḥ*
*MEANING : The presence of the Supreme Lord can be realized just as the sun is realized first as a reflection on water, and again as a second reflection on the wall of a room, although the sun itself is situated in the sky.*
*PURPORT : The example given herewith is perfect. The sun is situated in the sky, far, far away from the surface of the earth, but its reflection can be seen in a pot of water in the corner of a room. The room is dark, and the sun is far away in the sky, but the sun's reflection on the water illuminates the darkness of the room. A pure devotee can realize the presence of the Supreme Personality of Godhead in everything by the reflection of His energy. In the Viṣṇu Purāṇa it is stated that as the presence of fire is understood by heat and light, so the Supreme Personality of Godhead, although one without a second, is perceived everywhere by the diffusion of His different energies. It is confirmed in the Īśopaniṣad that the presence of the Lord is perceived everywhere by the liberated soul, just as the sunshine and the reflection can be perceived everywhere although the sun is situated far away from the surface of the globe.*

నారదుడిట్లు పలికెను -
గృహస్థుడగు శంభుని ఆనందదాయకమగు ఉత్తమ చరితమును, గణశ కుమారస్వాముల పవిత్రగాథను మేము వింటిమి (1). శంకరుడు రుద్రరూపుడై శత్రువులను సంహరిస్తూ విహరించిన ఉత్తమ చరిత్రను ఇపుడు పరమప్రీతితో వర్ణించి చెప్పుము (2). పరాక్రమ వంతుడగు శివభగవానుడు దేవద్రోహులగు అసురుల మూడు నగరములను ఒకే బాణముతో ఏకకాలమునందు ఎట్లు దహించెను? (3) చంద్రుని శిరముపై ధరించు వాడు, సర్వదా మాయారూపిణి యగు పార్వతితో కలిసి విహరించు వాడు అగు శివప్రభుని చరితమునంతను చెప్పుము. ఈ చరితము దేవతలకు, ఋషులకు సుఖమును కలిగించును (4).
బ్రహ్మ ఇట్లు పలికెను -
పూర్వము వ్యాసుడు ఋషిశ్రేష్ఠుడగు సనత్కుమారుని ఇదే విధముగా ప్రశ్నించగా, ఆయన చెప్పిన వృత్తాంతమునే నేను చెప్పెదను(5).
సనత్కుమారుడిట్లు పలికెను -
వ్యాసా! మహాప్రాజ్ఞా! చంద్రశేఖరుని చరిత్రను వినుము. జగత్తును లయము చేయు ఆ ప్రభువు ఒకే బాణముతో త్రిపురములను దహించిన తెరంగును వినుము (6). ఓ మహర్షీ! శివపుత్రుడగు స్కందుడు తారకాసురుని సంహరించగా, ఆతని పుత్రులగు ముగ్గురు రాక్షసులు మిక్కిలి దుఃఖించిరి (7). పెద్దవాని పేరు తారకాక్షుడు. రెండవవాడు విద్యున్మాలి. మూడవవాడు కమాలాక్షుడు, ముగ్గురు సమానమగు బలము గలవారే (8). దేవద్రోహులగు ఆ రాక్షసులు జితేంద్రియులు, మనస్సును నియంత్రించినవారు, సత్య వాక్య పరాయణులు, దృఢసంకల్పము గలవారు మరియు మహావీరులు(9).

2. Now please narrate lovingly the story of how Śiva killed wicked persons playfully.
3. How did the lord burn off three cities (tripura) of the Asuras with a single arrow simultaneously? What sort of an arrow was it?
4. Please narrate the story of the moon-crested lord conducive to the happiness of the gods and sages and a play of the magic of Śiva.
Brahmā said:—
5. When he was asked by Vyāsa formerly, the excellent sage Sanatkumāra narrated the story. I will repeat the same.
Sanatkumāra said:—
6. O Vyāsa of great intellect, listen to the story of the moon-crested lord, how the annihilator of the universe burnt the three cities (tripura) with a single arrow.
7. O great sage, when the Asura Tāraka was killed by Skanda, the son of Śiva, his three sons performed austerities.
8. The eldest of them was Tārakākṣa, the middle one Vidyunmālī and the youngest Kamalākṣa. All of them were of equal strength.
9. They were self-controlled, well prepared, disciplined, truthful, of steady mind, heroic and inimical to the gods.
10. Eschewing all enjoyments captivating the mind, they went to the cavern of the mountain Meru[1] and performed a wonderful penance.
11. The three sons of Tāraka eschewed all desires in the season of spring. They disdained music, the sound of instruments as well as jubilation and performed penances.
